Work on Zaanbrug (near Wormerveer and Wormer)

At the beginning of next year, the construction of a new bridge between Wormerveer and Wormer will start in the province of North Holland. The current Zaanbrug is due for replacement.

A larger passage opening will be realized by replacing the bridge. However, this can cause nuisance for pleasure craft and professional sailors. Ships must take nuisance into account.

The bridge will go through some changes. As is becoming more and more common, efforts are being made to accommodate both water and road traffic. The width will be approximately 16.50 meters after the replacement in March 2022. The height to pass under it will be around 2.90 meters. The advantage of this is that the bridge has to be opened less often and causes less nuisance for traffic on foot, by bicycle and by car that crosses the bridge. The advantage for boaters and shippers is that they have to wait less often and for a long time for the bridge to open.

Temporary bridge locally operated
A temporary bridge will be built during the work to accommodate ship and road traffic. This will be served locally and will have a lower passage route. The temporary bridge that will be in place from March 2022 between Wormer and Wormerveer will have a vertical clearance of approximately 1.20 metres. The new bridge is expected to be ready for use at the end of 2023.
